Insider has launched its list of the 100 largest Owner Managed Businesses by turnover in Northern Ireland.
The inaugural OMB 100 list (which will be published annually) has been compiled by Insider from information gained from Companies House and includes firms based in the region with shareholding directors. There are many other family owned and managed businesses on the list which includes a diverse range of sectors.
W&R Barnett, a fourth generation family business, tops the list. A group of international commodity trading, storage, agribusiness and industrial companies, W&R Barnett has a combined turnover in excess of £1.2bn.
The list also includes the reported pre-tax profits that the businesses have achieved. One company with one of the highest pre-tax profits as a percentage of turnover is CDE (49 on the list). Described as the world's leading provider of wet processing solutions within the natural processing and waste recycling sectors, CDE diverts millions of tons of material from landfill, protecting sands in areas where natural reserves are in decline and 'creating game-changing solutions'.
Companies whose ownership has been passed on through generations of families are, not surprisingly, well represented on the list. One family-owned business is Kane Group, which was acquired by the McMullan family in 2003. The Banbridge headquartered MEP contractor which has a strong presence in London, will be the first of a series of interviews with the leaders of selected companies on the Owner Managed Businesses 100 that Insider will be publishing, starting next Monday 31st October.
